I've recently renewed my interest in the various happenings and announcements on all things web related (and this now includes a variety of social media too).
I had just discovered the Mozilla Ubiquity project (http://labs.mozilla.com/projects/ubiquity/) announced last year, when Google announced Wave and I wonder: can anyone else see a natural synergy between these concepts?
Also, once Wave is released into the public domain, in a fairly short time even casual users will have built a dense library of waves. What kind of storage overhead will there be say in comparison to current communication tools eg AIM + email? How efficient will searching be? What sort of housekeeping options will be available?
Finally, I am hoping that someone will find a way to exploit the Wave protocol for use with voice recognition software and also text-to-speech.
You asked a few other questions.... Which I really do not know the answers to.... But I'm willing to give you my best guesses.... Perhaps someone else will come along and correct me if I'm wrong...
:)
What kind of storage overhead will there be say in comparison to current communication tools eg AIM + email?
Because storage is becoming so so so very cheap... Even Gmail gives every free account 7GB of free storage... I think this will become a non-issue... and fast.
How efficient will searching be?
Did you watch the demo? It took less than 1 second to update live search results in real time....
What sort of housekeeping options will be available?
Let's hope that "housekeeping" - as far as the server side stuff is concerned - is modern, automated, and self-maintaining. As for the user side of things.... Perhaps you mean to ask, "What sort of tools will become available for organizing your 'In Box'...?"
They demonstrated some tools already... Like automatically linking waves inside of other waves... In effect, organizing yours waves.... WITHIN a wave....
However, since this project is Open Source... I have complete confidence that all the developers in the world will be racking their collective brains to come up with newer and better ways to keep you, and your waves, organized.
What would YOU like to see.... in the way of keeping your Waves (i.e. threads of communication / document creation / discussion / etc) organized..... in a way to make you more productive...?
Finally, I am hoping that someone will find a way to exploit the Wave protocol for use with voice recognition software and also text-to-speech.
Oh, you can be sure that some developers somewhere are working on these things already!
I can see a plug-in for Oovoo and Skype coming along VERY VERY VERY soon....
And even cooler will be speech-to-text. Given that the entire Internet is the language model, and the awesomeness of technologies like the spelling robot, Spelly, it should be attainable in our lifetimes.
It depends on how many people you give access to and your tolerance of spam. On one of my MySpace accounts I have over 13,000 friends. No way I can closely moderate that account so I put up with a little spam. On the Google Wave I think it will be s…
Hi, Group!
I've installed skype on a system running Jaunty. I hear all the skype sounds but can not get my callers to hear me. Ok, I only have talked to the echo test service. When I record with Audacity I can hear those sounds. The mic works. I ha…
Hello Ubuntuers!
What twitter client(s) do you use? I find that the main and mobile versions of the twitter web site are not fully accessible to blind folk, of which I am one. There is an accessible web interface to Twitter. When one posts a tweet,…
I'm trying to install Jaunty onto a laptop with a non-functional optical drive. I have found USB install images for the Netbook Remix. Will this remix load onto a machine that does not have an Adam processor? If it will not, Where can I find one of…
